I’ve had two very successful sessions at the BW Basement with a group of ‘students’ from the Film and Darkroom Group of London Independent Photography (LIP).
Taking over the complete darkroom, the students found the facilities first-class – a good range of enlargers and easy-to-use developing and drying facilities.
We all loved the homely atmosphere of the BW Basement (and the cafe opposite) and we will be back early next year for more group sessions.

Keith, who introduced me to darkroom printing, was thorough and patient, which made the experience enjoyable and built my confidence to come back and print on my own.

It is great to see the results of an expert eye at work, no Photoshop….a human being with skill and determination to get magnificent results from my old negatives.

It’s been a delight watching the darkroom expand and more people come in over the years, the facilities and equipment remain second-to-none in my experiences, and I’ve used many darkrooms in the past!
If you’re new to this, or a seasoned veteran, Keith couldn’t make you feel any more welcome, and you will quickly be producing excellent work in his well setup darkroom.

Just to touch base and say what a wonderful time Kyle and I had yesterday.
I had intended to do some printing myself, but David and Keith were so full of interesting facts about all things photography, historical and modern I spent most of the day picking their brains and just generally having a good time remembering long forgotten techniques and darkroom tips.
For Kyle, he initially expressed a mild interest in photography and I feel I coerced him into doing the darkroom session (I’m an absolute believer you do not understand photography, digital or analogue, until you’ve developed and printed a film) but he absolutely loved it and is saving up already for his next session. The main impression was how ‘false’ his iPhone felt now and he is looking forward to getting his hands on my Nikon FM2 again, which I really did not expect. Normally we get home from a day out and he is straight on the computer, but last night we couldn’t get rid of him as he chatted all about the day and showed us his work.
Another added benefit was discovering some old family negatives which I now cannot wait to print up.

I found David to be an excellent teacher, and very easy going.

I’ve been using this darkroom regularly for the last two years.
It is a well organised space with a good range of equipment for all film formats and printing needs. I print fibre based paper up to 24 x 20 and the enlargers and equipment cater for all my needs perfectly.
It makes it so much easier to get in a good days worth of printing when you have a comfortable environment and this fits the bill perfectly. Having been a photographer and printer for over forty years I would highly recommend this darkroom.

I also experimented with the paper processing machine which developed the prints automatically and this worked perfectly.

All round excellent experience hiring a darkroom for the day at Black and White Basement.
They have fantastic equipment which is all well maintained. Keith was very friendly and was available if I needed his help with anything.
Free parking was a bonus and all for a very reasonable price. I will definitely use again.
I just booked my second tuition session in Black & White Basement. The owner is really friendly, their equipment is professional and they provide a one on one tuition to learn.
I will advertise them to all my photographer friends who need a quiet and peaceful environment for developing their negs. and do enlargements.
